Born Mary Fontanella in Turin Italy in 1661, one of twelve children. At the age of twelve she joined the Cistercians at Saluzza, but soon returned home to help with the family after her father’s death. She entered the Discalced Carmelite Convent of St. Christina in Turin, Italy in 1675 despite the protests of her family and was Novice Mistress and Prioress several times. A visionary and mystic, she underwent numerous spiritual trials and diabolical attacks. She was particularly devoted to St. Joseph and founded a Carmelite monastery at Moncaglieri in his honor. She died on December 16, 1717 of natural causes, and was beatified in 1865 by Pope Pius IX.
