Carmelite Venerables/Servants of God

 Updated 10/04/09

Carmelite Shield

Below is a list of Carmelite Venerables and Servants of God.  These are the very beginning steps on the process to canonization.  This list is several years old and subject to revision.  Some of these may have been beatified and as each is researched will be moved to the appropriate category.  If you see an error on this list please post a comment.

I welcome any information you may have, or recommended readings on the lives of these 80+ great Carmelites.

Venerables

Venerable is the title for a person who has been declared “heroic in virtue” during the investigation and process leading to possible canonization as a saint. Before a person is considered to be venerable he or she must be declared as such by a proclamation, approved by the pope, of having lived a life that was “heroic in virtue” — the virtues being the Theological Virtues of faith, hope and charity and the Cardinal Virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. The next step is beatification, at which point the person is referred to as The Blessed, and then finally canonization, at which point the person is referred to as Saint.

  • Angelo Paoli - to be Beatified

July 3rd, 2009 – Pope Benedict XVI, received in a private audience the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Archbishop Angelo Amato, SDB. During the course of the audience the Holy Father authorized the Congregation to promulgate the Decree concerning a miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Angelo Paoli, (1642-1720), Italian national and Professed Priest of the Carmelite Order.  The Holy See, in consultation with the Order and the Bishops concerned, will set a date and a place for the Beatification.

Servants of God

Servant of God is the title given to a deceased person of the Roman Catholic Church whose life and works are being investigated in consideration for official recognition by the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church as a saint in heaven.

Receiving the title Servant of God is the first of the four steps in the canonization process. The next step is being declared Venerable, upon a decree of heroicity or martyrdom.
